The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades...

Thursday, May 29

As I was pulling in the driveway I couldn't help but to chuckle as I thought of the song "The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades" by Timbuk 3. This song popped in my head as I watched my husband walking across the lawn mowing in a black shirt and jeans while wearing shades. I must admit.... it's a cool thing being married to "coolest looking" lawn mowing husband on the road :)

The mower Tim was using is one that was given to us by his parents, but I just wanted to mention that he only uses that when the lawn gets to be too much with our Great States Corp. manual mower. We heard that mowing your lawn for one hour with a conventional gasoline-powered lawn mower can cause more air pollution than driving about 140 miles in a new car.

Purple Iris Blooming

Wednesday, May 28

As I left the house this morning I received the wonderful surprise of seeing the purple iris opening. I had transplanted it a few weeks ago, from my parents yard. The first thing I noticed is the fragrance. I could smell it 50 feet away! It totally permeated the yard with a sweet smell. And it has an extremely vibrant purple color that just pops out of the green background.

Landscape - Planted Ornamental Oregano & Lavender

Saturday, May 24

Today I planted 3 things in the front yard. I planted 2 ornamental oregano and one Lavender in the circle. The ornamental oregano will eventually cascade over and down the stone wall.

Planting bed and Rubber mulch

Sunday, May 18

Even though today was kind of a poopy rainy day, I pushed myself at every chance I got, in between the rain to mulch the planting bed off the circle. I liked red rubber mulch so much, in the planting bed off the driveway, I decided to use it in the planting bed off the circle. I'm using a brown color though, cause I really liked the dark soil color there.

I covered the entire bed in landscape fabric, to keep the rubber separate from the soil, then spread the mulch around. The cypress really pop now and it gives the bed a nice crisp look.

Saturday, May 17

Continuing the spring clean up job, I pruned some of the junipers today and had gone shopping for mulch. The golden juniper, in the circle area, was looking rather shabby so I pruned off most of the lower branches and gave it more of a bonsai look to it. Then I also bonsai'd the blue star juniper too. I think I'm going bonsai crazy.... someone stop me!!! :)

Another thing I needed to prune is the little Japanese Maple. It's humorous to me... the Redbuds are sparse, because I didn't understand pruning at the time, but the maple is too full, because I pruned it well. It's so dense that I had to prune inside branches to give it some sun and air to the center.

I'm really liking this whole gardener side of me though. I'm having a lot of fun watching things grow, as well as finding new interesting plants to plant. For instance, I was killing time on Thursday 5/15, before hanging with some friends, and stopped by Home Depot to found this very cool funky looking ornamental plant called a Tamarix. It looks evergreen, but it's deciduous and gets intriguing pink flowers on it.

Tomorrow I plan on working on the planting bed off the circle and adding some landscape fabric and brown rubber mulch. I liked the darkness of the soil there, so i decided to go with brown mulch, instead of the red rubber mulch like by the driveway.

Annual Bonfire at New Firepit

Saturday, May 10

Saturday night we had our annual bonfire to burn our xmas tree. We burn our tree to kick off the good weather ahead. This year we got to use the semi-completed fire pit, instead of an area in the mud.

Annual bonfire of xmas tree

It was a fun night filled with friends, marshmallows, s'mores, and popping popcorn. Tim used the popcorn maker that his parents gave him. They use to use it when he was a kid, so he was excited to dust it off and use it. Next time we'll use less cornels though as it popped the lid off :)

Crabapple in Bloom

Thursday, May 8

Today I got a couple of surprises. The first came from a call from Tim today. He made me smile by telling be our hummingbirds are back. I love seeing them... they're fun to watch.... except they always seem go to the side of the feeder that we can't see them. I get sad cause when they go to that side, all I see is their butts.

The second surprise was seeing the Candymint Crabapple in bloom. Last year it only had a couple of flowers, this yr half the tree is covered. It's such a vibrant cool color to see when you pull in.

Another nice vibrant color to see when you pull in is the Japanese Maple, which is a deep burgundy color that pops right out of the green grass.

Garage - More Fasttrack Shelves

Saturday, May 3

Tim had gone out today, so I decided to use the opportunity and clean and re-oraganized the garage a bit, since his car wasn't there. This project included cleaning as well as hanging up some more Fasttracks.

One of the things I want to do is get all the tools on one side and the garden stuff on the other. First though I needed to get up some more Rubbermaid Fasttrack shelves and get out of there the floor shelves, so that I could store some of the gardening tools underneath.
